How Super Cruise† works

Hands-free convenience

With an attentive driver, and under proper conditions, available Super Cruise† capability (subscription required) allows hands-free driving on compatible highways. Even changing lanes is hands-free thanks to Lane Change on Demand and Automatic Lane Change.†

Innovative technology

Available Super Cruise† capability (subscription required) technology works with Adaptive Cruise Control, which helps you automatically maintain a selected following gap from the vehicle ahead.

Comfortable commutes

Available Super Cruise† capability (subscription required) functions with OnStar®† and uses real-time cameras, sensors, GPS and LiDAR map data to help detect curves, helping make long drives and commutes on compatible roads more comfortable.

Safety or driver-assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Visibility, weather and road conditions may affect feature performance. Available Super Cruise functionality is enabled by a data connection for real-time, precise positioning and periodic Super Cruise map updates. In order to operate Super Cruise, you must have an active and eligible OnStar®† Super Cruise plan†. Specific settings for certain features must be followed. How to use Super Cruise†

  • In order to use Super Cruise, ensure Adaptive Cruise Control* is turned on. The Adaptive Cruise Control symbol will illuminate in white on the Driver Information Center. If Adaptive Cruise Control is already set, the symbol will be green with a speed shown. 

  • When Super Cruise detects you are on a compatible road, paying sufficient attention and all other driving conditions are met (lane markings visible, GPS available, no system faults, etc.), a white Super Cruise symbol will display on the instrument cluster.

  • When it is safe to do so, press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel to engage Super Cruise. When the symbol and steering-wheel light bar illuminate in green, you may remove your hands from the steering wheel. Do not remove your hands from the steering wheel unless the light bar is green, which indicates that Super Cruise is steering the vehicle. To disengage Super Cruise, press the Super Cruise button again or press the brake pedal.

  • On Buick models equipped with Super Cruise, if the Automatic Lane Change* capability is enabled in the vehicle’s Settings menu, Super Cruise may initiate a lane change under the following conditions:  

    • The Super Cruise System may initiate a lane change to the left or right to pass a slower-moving vehicle ahead and a subsequent lane change to return to your original lane.  
    • The Super Cruise System may initiate a lane change to the left or right when the current lane is ending ahead or to provide space for vehicles merging from an ending lane

    A message appears on the Driver Information Center during the lane change to provide more information on the status of the lane change. To cancel a Super Cruise lane change, move the turn signal lever or manually take over the steering wheel at any time

    For Lane Change on Demand,* when the driver activates the turn signal, the system will look for an acceptable opening in the indicated lane and alert other vehicles that a lane change is imminent. If the indicated lane is determined to be open, the vehicle will merge into the desired lane. Or, if the desired lane is unavailable, the system will notify the driver that merging must be manually completed. The system will display messages, such as “looking for an opening” or “changing lanes,” to keep the driver informed.
Step 1

On Buick models equipped with Super Cruise, if the Automatic Lane Change† capability is enabled in the vehicle’s Settings menu, available Super Cruise may initiate a lane change under the following conditions:  

 

  • To use the left lane to pass a slower moving vehicle ahead and a subsequent lane change to the right to return to your original lane
  • The Super Cruise System may initiate a lane change to the left or right when the current lane is ending ahead or to provide space for vehicles merging from an ending lane
  • To the left or the right lane when a slower moving vehicle is detected in the adjacent ending lane to provide space for the merging vehicle

 

A message appears on the Driver Information centre during the lane change to provide more information on the status of the lane change. To cancel a Super Cruise lane change, move the turn signal lever or manually take over the steering wheel at any time.

What is Super Cruise?

Available Super Cruise capability (subscription required) is the first true hands-free driver-assistance technology for compatible highways. It uses cameras, sensors, GPS data and LiDAR-scanned map data, and steers to maintain the vehicle’s position in a lane. It works with Adaptive Cruise Control†, which helps you automatically maintain a selected following gap from the vehicle ahead. On select vehicles, Super Cruise can also make lane changes. In vehicles equipped with Lane Change on Demand†, the vehicle executes the lane change once the driver activates the turn signal. In vehicles with Automatic Lane Change†, Super Cruise can execute lane changes automatically when enabled in the vehicle Settings menu. 

 

Where can I use Super Cruise?

Available Super Cruise capability (subscription required) has access to more miles of compatible highways than any other hands-free driving technology. Which Buick vehicles offer Super Cruise?

Super Cruise capability (subscription required) will be available on the 2025 Enclave, when properly equipped.

 

How does Super Cruise work?

Available Super Cruise capability (subscription required) uses cameras, sensors, GPS information and high-definition LiDAR map data to steer and maintain the vehicle’s position in the current lane. However, you still need to pay attention and keep your eyes on the road while using Super Cruise.

 

Is it a self-driving car?

No. Available Super Cruise capability (subscription required) is designed to maintain the current lane, but you must always pay attention in case you need to take control to avoid emergency situations, exit the highway, make a turn, stop for a traffic-control device or perform any other driving manoeuvre for example, Super Cruise is only available on compatible highways.

 

Do I still need to pay attention?

Yes! You should always be ready to take control of the steering or brakes while using available Super Cruise capability (subscription required). To help ensure you’re staying focused on the road, a Driver Attention camera located atop the steering column monitors driver head and eye position to estimate driver attention to the road. If the system detects you may not be paying enough attention, the steering-wheel light bar flashes green. If you continue to remain inattentive, or if you need to take control of the vehicle immediately, the bar will flash red.

 

In the case of an unresponsive driver, after the first two levels of alerts, a voice prompt will be heard and the vehicle will slow to a complete stop with its hazard lights activated. The vehicle will contact OnStar Emergency Services† so an OnStar® Emergency-Certified Advisor can communicate with the driver.

How do I activate Super Cruise?

Activating Available Super Cruise capability (subscription required) is simple and convenient. When you’re on a compatible highway, turn on your vehicle’s Adaptive Cruise Control and set a speed. Then look for the white Super Cruise steering-wheel symbol in the Driver Information Centre. When it appears, Super Cruise is available. Simply push the Super Cruise button on your steering wheel (it looks like a steering wheel) to enable. The light bar at the top of your steering wheel will turn green when Super Cruise is active. When it is safe to do so, and in compliance with any local laws, you may now take your hands off the steering wheel—while keeping your eyes on the road.

 

Of course, as every vehicle is different, you should consult your vehicle Owner’s Manual for detailed instructions or ask your authorized dealer for more information.

 

What is Automatic Lane Change?

When enabled, and under certain conditions, Automatic Lane Change† can steer the vehicle to perform a single lane change without any input needed from the driver. For example, the system can pass a slower vehicle in its lane, change lanes if the current lane is ending or change lanes to provide space for vehicles merging from an ending lane. A message appears in the Driver Information Centre to offer more information on the status of the manoeuvre.

 

How can I take over steering control when Super Cruise is engaged?

If you’d like to take control of the vehicle after Available Super Cruise has been activated, place your hands firmly on the steering wheel. The Super Cruise system is designed to detect that you have taken over control, and the steering-wheel light bar will change from green to blue. When the light bar is blue, Super Cruise will stop steering and you must steer the vehicle. To reactivate Super Cruise, centre the vehicle in the lane and wait for the light bar to turn green. If you would like to take over steering and deactivate Super Cruise, you can do so by firmly placing your hands on the steering wheel and pressing the Super Cruise button or the brake pedal. 

 

Super Cruise disengaged and I don’t know why. How can I learn more?

If available Super Cruise disengages while you’re using it, simply push the Super Cruise button within 10 seconds of disengagement for more information. A message will appear in the Driver Information Centre with an explanation, such as, “No Road Information,” “Driving in Exit Lane” or “Looking Away from Road for Too Long.” You can find descriptions of these messages in your vehicle Owner’s Manual.

 

Why do I need an active trial or paid subscription to use Super Cruise?

Available Super Cruise capability (subscription required) uses a data connection for real-time, precise positioning of the vehicle, as well as to download regular map updates that help ensure your vehicle has the most up-to-date, accurate maps available for hands-free driving. An active, eligible OnStar Super Cruise subscription is required to maintain that data connection.

 

Is an OnStar Super Cruise subscription included with my vehicle?

The 2025 Enclave includes 1 month of access† to the data connectivity required for available Super Cruise functionality. At the end of the vehicle’s trial period, you’ll need to purchase a Super Cruise subscription  in order to keep using Super Cruise.

 

My trial is ending. How do I keep using Super Cruise?

Because available  Super Cruise needs an OnStar Super Cruise subscription, you need to sign up for a Super Cruise plan to keep enjoying the future of driving after your 1-month trial† period ends.

 

How do I sign up for a Super Cruise plan?

The simplest way to sign up for a Super Cruise plan is to push the blue OnStar button inside your Super Cruise-equipped vehicle and speak to an Advisor. They’ll be able to assist you through the sign-up process. You can also visit GM account, or call us at 1-888-4ONSTAR (1-888-466-7827).
